The auricle piercing has recently become very popular among men and women. In fact, it is the second most popular ear piercing. Many people get this piercing as an alternative to an ear lobe piercing for something different. The auricle is a piercing of the ear cartilage that is located on the outside rim of the ear halfway between the top and bottom, hence the reason some people refer to it as a rim piercing.

Does the auricle hurt more than an earlobe piercing since it goes through cartilage? Even though I don't have one of these piercings, my guess is that it is a little more painful. I know my pinna piercing hurt more than my lobes and it goes through the cartilage of the ear also.
The auricle is commonly pierced at 14 gauge. The piercer needs to take care not to place the piercing too close to the edge of the ear or it could migrate and be rejected. What type jewelry is worn in the auricle? The jewelry I see a lot in this piercing is the captive bead ring. Others prefer a short labret piece. You can also wear circular barbells and segment rings in it.

Taking care of the auricle piercing is somewhat simple. It is important not to twist and turn the piercing during the first year. The piercing can take as long as 18 months to heal. It's best to clean the auricle twice a day for at least the first month. Make sure not to overclean it and always wash your hands before cleaning. Also avoid swimming for at least the first month after you get the piercing.

Is the auricle piercing right for you? If not, there are many other ear piercing options. Check out the conch ear piercing next.
