The conch piercing is a great alternative to other popular ear piercings. The conch can be done in two locations, the inner conch and the outer conch. The inner conch is also known as a shell piercing and is located in the center of the ear with the piercing going through its cartilage. It's a pretty simple piercing for a piercer and only requires a piercing needle. The outer conch is located on the outside cartilage of the ear between the hollow center and the rim where the pinna piercing is located.

Both conch piercings are usually pierced at smaller gauges, anywhere from 16 gauge to 12 gauge. Neither piercing has the tendancy to migrate like some piercings closer to the rim of the ear.
If the origianl gauge is not large enough for you, the conch piercings both can be stretched, just like many people do with their ear lobe piercings. Keep in mind that stretching cartilage is permanent so it's a good idea to make sure you really want a larger gauge in these cartilage piercings before you stretch them.

What body jewelry is best to wear in the conch? There is a wide array of options you have that range from large captive bead rings and circulars to short curved barbells, labrets, and earlets. It's best to wait for your piercing to heal before you change the piercing jewelry. The normal healing time for both the inner and outer conch is up to a year so you have to be patient.

The aftercare of the conch piercing is about the same as many other ear piercings. Soaking the piercing at least once a day in sea salt water is a good idea. Clean it twice a day with cleaning solution approved for piercings. I use this great medicated lotion/soap called Provon for my piercings. Avoid touching the piercing and fiddling with it because of bacteria transmission. During the first few months it will also probably be uncomfortable to sleep on this ear piercing. Finally, just enjoy and show off your new conch.
